Tenkoku (Stone Carving) Workshop

Tenkoku – seal-engraving – is a highly satisfying craft that produces a useful hanko stamp (see: the red bit in the Niwaki logo) ready for you to personalise your stationary, gifts and much more.

Having converted your name (or any word you like) into a kanji pictogram or into katakana letterforms, Nao will guide you in the creation of the design for your carving, which starts off as a simple sketch on paper before being refined into a more stylised symbol. As a highly-skilled master calligrapher, Nao will employ her unique insight into the shape and form of Japanese letters to help you discover the most pleasing version of your design, balanced with the practicalities of how it will carve and print.

Once you’re happy with the look of your hanko, you’ll get down to the surprisingly meditative business of carving the actual stamp, working with traditional tools, techniques and materials. You will experiment with printing on washi paper, and, if time allows, begin to explore alternative approaches to all the core techniques. The end results are sure to be treasured for years to come.

Hanko (Stamp seal) Workshop

A hanko (判子), also known as an inkan (印鑑), is a small carved stamp or seal. All adults in Japan own an individual hanko which shows their full name or family name which is used as a way of signing documents or contracts with ink; it is not common to use a signature.

Hanko can be made from various materials like plastic, wood or even ivory. Stone seals have been used in East Asia for thousands of years; similar to wax seals used in Europe, they were a decorative way to seal letters and sign artwork. In the past, their use in Japan was limited to a very few people; the emperor, shoguns, court officials, and other important people would have used seals on official documents.

After the Meiji Restoration in the 19th Century, hanko became part of daily life after a law was passed requiring ordinary people them on important documents. Nowadays, Japanese may have 2 seals: a custom-made one used for formal documents, and another that is used in more casual situations.
